Win Against the YouTubers Without Going Viral

I watch a lot of YouTube.

Possibly too much.

I even pay for the version without ads because I was slowly losing my sanity every 39 seconds.

To be fair, most of what I watch is genuinely useful.

I watch martial arts videos to study new ideas.

Business videos to improve the dojo.

Workout videos to follow along with.

Seminars from people I admire.

Audiobooks while driving.

A lot of educational content.

Of course, there is still that remaining 10% of YouTube that is complete garbage.

The “Nobody Believed In Me” Story

One trend I started noticing with many influencer-style videos is that they all seem to follow a similar storyline.

It usually sounds something like this:

“I was struggling for years. Nobody believed in me. Everyone said I would fail. People laughed at me. But I proved them all wrong.”

You hear versions of this story constantly online.

And eventually, it made me reflect on my own experience opening 603 Karate.

At age 41, I left a stable full-time career with benefits and opened a dojo with exactly two students.

On paper, that may not sound particularly brilliant.

Thankfully, it worked out.

Although if I were starting over today, there are certainly things I would do differently.

My Experience Was Different

What stood out to me most when I made that decision was this:

Not a single person in my life told me I was going to fail.

Not one.

Nobody mocked the idea.

Nobody treated me like I was crazy.

Now, maybe some people privately had doubts. Honestly, I certainly had doubts myself from time to time.

But the people around me were supportive.

They asked practical questions.

They challenged me respectfully.

And I appreciated that because it showed they cared.

So why did my experience feel so different from the stories constantly repeated online?

I came up with two possibilities.

Possibility One: The Internet Likes Drama

To be fair, dramatic stories sell.

People online are often selling:

  • courses,

  • coaching,

  • products,

  • personal brands,

  • or inspiration itself.

Conflict creates attention.

Struggle creates emotion.

And “everyone doubted me” makes for a much more compelling story than:

“My friends and family were actually pretty supportive.”

That does not mean every story is fake.

But the internet does tend to reward exaggeration.

Possibility Two: The Right People Matter

This explanation feels much more important to me.

I believe I already had the right people in my life.

The people around me knew I had thought carefully about what I was doing. They understood I had a plan.

The plan did not guarantee success.

Nothing does.

But the people closest to me could see that I was serious and committed.

That changed everything.

Instead of feeling judged, I felt supported.

Instead of feeling isolated, I felt encouraged.

And over time, I realized something important:

Success rarely belongs to one person alone.

Nobody Succeeds Entirely Alone

I technically run the dojo myself.

I am usually the one cleaning the toilets too.

But 603 Karate is far from an individual success story.

I still have letters in my office from friends who encouraged me before the dojo even opened. People telling me they believed I would succeed long before there was evidence that I actually would.

Those words mattered.

They still matter.

The right people in your life can quietly change the direction of everything.

Martial Arts and Support Systems

This is one reason martial arts schools can become so valuable for adults.

Good training environments are not just places to exercise.

They become places filled with:

  • encouragement,

  • accountability,

  • discipline,

  • challenge,

  • and support.

Over time, many students discover they are surrounded by people who genuinely want to see them improve.

That matters more than most people realize.

Especially in adulthood, when many people feel isolated, discouraged, or unsupported in other areas of life.

Final Thoughts

If there is something meaningful you want to pursue, ask yourself two questions:

Do you have a thoughtful plan?

And do you have the right people around you?

Because while determination matters, environment matters too.

The right people will challenge you honestly, support you sincerely, and help you continue moving forward when things become difficult.

And eventually, you should strive to become that kind of person for someone else too.
